Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an Accounting & Payroll Specialist for a mission-driven research and innovation organization. This role is based in Berkeley, CA, and offers a mostly onsite schedule with some flexibility for hybrid work.
Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive professional to support core accounting, payroll, and operational functions that keep the organization running smoothly. This role will collaborate closely with external accounting service providers and internal leadership to ensure seamless processes, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with organizational standards. The ideal candidate enjoys balancing detail-oriented accounting tasks with cross-functional collaboration in a mission-focused environment.

Responsibilities - Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, receivable, and reconciliations
- Partner with service providers and internal leaders to ensure accurate payroll, benefit tracking, and timesheet systems
- Support compliance with organizational policies, sponsor requirements, and accounting standards
- Assist with audit preparation, financial reporting, and other administrative projects as needed
- Maintain accurate and organized records for financial transactions, payroll, and vendor relationships
- Contribute to a welcoming and professional environment through proactive communication and collaboration
Qualifications - Familiarity with accounting principles, payroll, and financial administration
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills with a focus on accuracy
- Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (experience with Sage Intacct and Paychex a plus)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer service mindset
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining confidentiality and discretion
Compensation And Benefits This exciting opportunity offers a competitive salary range of $70-85K, commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
