Position Summary

Working for a federally funded TRiO program providing academic, career and financial counseling to students encouraging participants to graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education.

Essential Functions

  1. Travel to target high schools during the academic year.
  2. Provide student services by:

-participant recruitment, orientation, and interviews;

-academic advising, postsecondary information, and career interest services;

-reviewing grades and monitoring academic progress towards postsecondary enrollment;

-building a feeling of unity within the groups for which they are responsible.

  1. Assist director in reviewing student records to determine program participant eligibility and status in the program.
  2. Work directly with parents/mentors, teachers, high-school guidance counselors, and tutors and assist participants with their academic needs.
  3. Provide supervision for activities during Saturday and summer programs.
  4. Work with staff members in developing, maintaining, and monitoring student progress towards enrolling in postsecondary education.
  5. Review participants’ portfolios and prepare records and reports.
  6. Plan academic services in collaboration with the project director.
  7. Motivate participants to complete high school and enroll in postsecondary education.
  8. Participate in program evaluation through follow-up surveys and participant tracking.
  9. Attend advisory board meetings.
  10. Assist in developing and maintaining curriculum for students.
  11. Assist with supervision of tutors and tutoring program.
  12. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Be proactive in reaching out to students to offer resources to help them be successful

Polished verbal and written presentation skills to provide education information in small and large groups

Technical skills:

Maintain up to date knowledge of communication tools and effectively use those tools

Maintain up to date knowledge to effective track and report on program data

Experience with data management and computer systems

Experience

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related area from an accredited institution

The Federal TRiO grant requires preference be given to individuals from backgrounds similar to that of Upward Bound participants – low income and first-generation college graduates.

Work Experience:

Experience working with disadvantaged students

Industry Knowledge:

Skills in assisting students to complete basic academic studies.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Working in a professional office environment this position requires sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, light lifting, grasping, talking, seeing, hearing and repetitive motion.

Ability to serve students during some evening, weekend, and overnight events.
